Game 3 of 2012 – Saadiyat Beach Golf Club

Captain’s Report – March Game – Saadiyat Beach Golf Club – 9 March 2012

Another well attended and enjoyable Jiggers game was held at Saadiyat Beach and Golf Club this past Friday.  The course was in pretty good nick but the wind later on in the morning reined in a number of players who were quick out the blocks at the start of their rounds!

Andre Naude and Saadiyat certainly raised the bar in terms of organization with us able to pre-order our lunch meal at check in, the score cards being pre-printed, including our Jiggers logo, and tables reserved for afterwards.  Very neat – must have something to do with all the SAffers employed there. (A parting shot for our retiring handicapper!!)  It was also pleasing to have some of the “brakes” join us for the prize giving – attractiveness of the Abu Dhabi contingent that brought them out of exile!

A big thank you to Andre for all the effort – another great turn out with 28 players including 24 Jiggers and 4 Guests. Gladly there were no “no-shows” although Craig Strydom nearly managed to play on his own at Yas Links!!.  Andre even managed to “un-invite” one of his guests when he figured out that Paddy Dalton and Dalton Taylor were not one and the same person! One “Dalton” had accepted and the other “Dalton” subsequently declined so no Daltons appeared on the list of players!  This is not the first time we have had confusion so a lesson to all organizers please.  Note further – we have two McKerchars – one a well behaved gentleman and the other a reprobate who goes around slapping people! All in all a really enjoyable day – thanks Andre.

It is really pleasing to see the strong turnouts at our games so far this year – trust this will continue even during the baking months of summer!

Welcome to our 4 Guests:

o    Bill Pugin

o    Dustin Robertson

o    Arne Bergh

o    Scott Griffiths

Thanks to Sean Drury who conducted a typically fast paced fines collection and managed to swell the year end party fund with some well thought out fines, although one couldn’t help wondering if there wasn’t a bit of payback time for those who have chirped over the years about his pace of play.  It may explain the reason why the Black Dog and the Ex El Capitano were missing from the rank and file for this game. One could safely assume that they would have been found wanting for a number of finable indiscretions had they been in attendance!

Prize Winners

Individual Stableford (open to Jiggers members only)

o    Jean van Loggerenberg 34 points, on a count out from Ernest Hosking 34 points

Betterball Stableford

o    Ernest Hosking and Charles Arnestad - - - 43 points

o    Wally Robinson and Arne Bergh - - - 42 points, on a count out from

o    Rob Edgecombe and Kevin Hudson 42 points

Individual Shotmakers

o    Nearest the Pin 0 – 14 handicaps - - - Craig Strydom

o    Nearest the Pin 15 – 28 handicaps - - - Charles Arnestad

o    Longest Drive 0 – 14 handicaps - - - Bryce Allan

o    Longest Drive 15 – 28 handicaps - - - No one on the fairway (donated to fines)! (It was subsequently realized that the ‘starting marker’ was too far down the fairway, confusing players into believing that a greater distance had been achieved before them).

Matchplay

A number of matchplay games were played:

o    Mike Berry beat Sean Drury 3 & 2

o    Dave Jones beat Corey Spring 2 & 1

o    Dave McKerchar beat Dave Green 6 & 4

o    Bruce Penn beat Kevin Smyth 3 & 2

The Fines Master noted a number of players who opted not to play their matchplays – the Chairman, the Vice Captain and the New Handicapper!!!

Next Game

Friday 6th April at Emirates Golf Club – Faldo Course

Confirmed tee times for 32 players – 8AM shotgun

Organizer: Kevin Hudson (Kevin is looking to swap this with one of the other organizers)

Fines Master: Bill Collins

Please note these tee times are being secured by a credit card and any no shows will be charged for.

Movers and Shakers

Congratulations to Mike and Barbara Berry whose eldest son Tyler, was picked for the Western Force A as scrumhalf against the Australian Barbarians in the curtain raiser to the Western Force V Queensland Reds Super 16 warm up game. Word has it that his distribution skills are as silky smooth as Mikes golf swing – we look forward to higher honors for young Tyler (although a bit miffed that he is not vying for the green and gold).

A glowing tribute was paid by the Chairman to our retiring Friendly Pom Handicapper, Martin Bayly who, as you know, is retiring and returning to the UK.  A real big thank you to Martin for all his efforts and hard work in this regard and in his persistent attempts to keep us all honest and also to help us improve our (it must be said) limited knowledge of the finer points of the rules of golf.  Martin has been a Jigger since the 2nd Jiggers game in January 2006 and has been the handicapper since January 2009.  Martin may still play in the April game provided he has persuaded his wife to leave his clubs out of the packed container – other than that I am sure we will see his pole-dancing feats and CK jocks on future away tours.  Thanks Martin, we wish you and Anne all the very best in your retirement. (A small bit of trivia – Anne has had more holes-in-one than all of us Jiggers put together in the time that they have been living in Dubai!)

Thanks to Brian Schofield for stepping in to the breach and taking over the duties of Scorer and Society Handicapper.  Welcome to the Committee Brian!  Brian, being more from the digital era than the preceding two Handicappers plans to introduce a bit more technology and try and simplify the process.  He will be calling on Dalton Taylor – apparently a Professor of Microsoft Access – to assist him in this regard.  In the meantime please submit all your scores directly to Brian using his office e-mail address.  Brian is known to be a no nonsense sort of fellow so beware all those who fail to submit their scores!

Jiggers on Facebook

Charles was again out with his lens and will notify us when the pictures from Saadiyat are up on Zuckerberg’s face!  The photo's have been uploaded here.  The Facebook page is here.

Annual Jiggers Subscriptions

Any outstanding subs – please ensure early settlement to the Chairman.  I sense him soon invoking clause 9.2 of the Jiggers Constitution and charging punitive interest rates that would even have the Greeks waking from their slumber.

Away tour

Dave Green has again done sterling work in organizing the tour – Northern Island it is.  If there is still interest from any other Jiggers please contact Dave directly.  So far he has 12 confirmed players.  The tour commences during the First Eid.  Thanks Dave – there is a huge amount of time and effort that has to be put in to making these tours successful.  For those who are going – bring on the Guinness!

Trophies

The Committee is relooking the trophies that we have for the various competitions.  Corey Spring has kindly donated a number of trophies that we will be bringing in to the mix.  These will be unveiled at the appropriate time.  Thanks Corey – much appreciated.

The leading jockey to date is still Kevin Hudson. However the runners are barely out the starting gate so no need to panic yet – just ensure you whip your ponies into some sort of shape!!

See you at the next game.

Happy golfing.

Captain Nest.
